Google pegs Mass. economic impact at $2b
Google Inc. generated over $2.2 billion of economic activity in Massachusetts last year, the company said Tuesday.
Amid a cluster of flowers and potted plants at Cambridge, Mass.-based Pemberton Farms & Garden Center,
Google officials discussed the firm’s economic impact in Massachusetts,
a question which Google has been asked repeatedly across the country,
the firm said.
Google held similar events in nine other U.S. cities Tuesday.
Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., said it
has generated over $2 billion in economic activity in Massachusetts for
advertisers and website publishers last year.
Brian Schmidt, who heads Google’s office in Boston, called Google “a growth engine for the state.”
Last year in Massachusetts Google worked with a total of 43,000
advertisers and web publishers while also awarding 230 grants worth $6
million to nonprofits.
Mark Saidnawey, vice president at Pemberton Farms & Garden
Center, credited Google Adwords with giving the local business a
national scope.
Founded in 1930, Pemberton Farms uses Google Adwords to promote its
gift basket business to companies across the country. Saidnawey noted
that by using the words “corporate gift basket” he saw a $2 click turn
into a $75,000 order last year.
“To be competitive, we need to use Adwords,” said Saidnawey.
